I want to work with you again!

It was a while ago since I wrote, I’ve been evaluating what has happened, and I have started a new project, called "Granny’s Dancing on the Table", which some of you might already know. The link to Granny on facebook is http://www.facebook.com/grannysdancing

Me and Andrea at Tangram Film will do this project together with Helene at Good World, Bobbi and Karin at Ozma gamedesign, Anna at Kore productions and Richie and Erling at Medea – the research institute of Malmö University, who also helped to get Nasty up on The Pirate Bay -I will soon give you an introduction of this wonderful team! And of course – hopefully – together with many more people and not at least all of YOU in some way or another, cause this project will be all about interaction and collaboration.

I am so amazed by all the fantastic work you have done, spreading the movie, seeding, translating, organize screenings or just be supportive, so I have decided I want to release the next feature also with a creative commons license, and I want you to be able to take part much more, already from the beginning of the production of the movie.

But this time I also want to find “regular” financing, cause I want the team to get paid, and it will be a challenge to both find money and to work with CC. I’m convinced it will work, but I will need you help! To be continued…

So far we have started to work with the script on facebook, where you can contribute with your own personal stories, thoughts and ideas, and soon we will walk into the next phase where you will be able to contribute with different kind of artistic material. But before I would like to know what you would like to do, what your whishes and needs and wants are…? Pease write, and let me know!

Of course I started to think about what to say, and realized that the relationship with you all – not as audience – but as co-creators and co-producers - is the most important thing for me as a director, and I believe my biggest challenge is to create a great space where YOU can create things and invent what’s going to happen.

I will also talk about how you took care of the movie, and how my perspective on creativity, and in fact, the world, has forever changed. Thank you for that!

The bank loan is GONE!!!!

Yesterday, almost one year after the premiere of Nasty at The Pirate Bay, it was screened at Swedish Television - as the first movie ever with a CC-license. I am not sure what this mean…. But I’m quite sure it means SOMETHING. Maybe it means more people will think of CC as a license for their work of art? Maybe means “the system” starts to realize they can’t fight the future, and that the concept of free culture continues to find its path?

I don’t know, what do you think it means?? What will it mean if more people use CC?

Do you think it will have an effect?

What’s concrete is that they pay us 7500 EUR, the same amount we so far received in donations. It’s less than they pay an ordinary Swedish movie, but still it’s awesome to us. This mean:

We can pay the bank loan. The bank loan is gone!!!!!! Damn it we did it! :) :)

We can make DVD:s. So now there will be REAL DVD:s with REAL covers for those of you who wants one! (please let me know if you’re interested. )

We can pay some of our invoices concerning master- copies, old application fees for festivals, and stupid things like that.

And it means that money we recieve from NOW on, will go to the TEAM and THE ACTORS! So any one who now contributes with little or a lot, directly pays the crew!

And this means a hell of a lot. And actually it means we did it! And it’s all thanks to you. Cause you were seeding, supporting, writing, paying. Maybe it’s like this: If you really really whish for the world to change – maybe somtehing will start to grow, starting with just a vauge scent of transformation.

Yesterday I was at a pre-premier for a wonderful movie, a dark fairytale. The movie tells us: If you wish for something hard enough, it will happen.

I think so.

Soon you will be able to know everything about this movie, in a very special way… ;) Have to bite my tongue not to tell… Aaahh! To be continued…. :)

And by the way.... we have found a Granny Dollar!!! :) :)

Swedish love in Kiev!

About 250 persons saw Nasty Old People in Kiev on Thursday. It was a fantastic screening with one hour of Q&A afterwards. The title in Ukraine is “Swedish love”

And this is the story of Nasty Old People coming to Kiev:

Valeriy and Irina found the movie on a torrent site, downloaded it and liked it so much they showed it to a distributer in Kiev, and the result was that Nasty was shown at two cinemas in Kiev for two weeks, plus this extra screening.

Now the movie will be shown in at least three other cities in Ukraine, plus on Ukrainian television! This is what can happen when a movie is released under Creative Common and when people are entrusted with the opportunity to distribute.

Reports from Nürnberg

It’s spring in the air, and here at Casablanca, a small independent theatre in the Bavarian region, important things are slowly growing.

Casablanca is one of those amazing truly independent theaters which are run by real enthusiast, who has a vision and motivation above the usual. It’s amazing to have the Deutschland-premiere of Nasty Old People in a context like this, where the same spirit rules as on kontrapunkt in Malmö.

Those who run Casablanca started a year ago with a theatre in disrepair and begun to renovate. Today they have lots of members and volunteers who builds, paints and renovates together for free, and thereby they put the marks of their hands and spirits into the walls. And you definitely feel this is a place run by visions and love, while watching the movie.

The two screenings we had so far went great, many people came and many questions were asked. In two weeks there will be more screenings. There were no entrance fee, the audience could donate to contribute to the bank loan, and afterwards we had some really nice discussions in the bar – both about the movie, but also about free art and culture.

So, keep seeding, and see you somewhere else in the world

Lost in Berlin

The first day in Berlin I was lost in the U-bahn, and happened to meet Zineb, also lost in the U-bahn. It turned out Zineb studies to become a producer / distributer and was on her way to write an article about alternative distribution, and we set up time for an interview. And as usual it turned out to be one of those meetings in life that just happens when you’re somewhat lost. This is not only true for when you’re lost in time and space, but also when the next step into the future is not quite clear. Not to know can be the best way to find a new and exciting path.

I have just come home from an amazing screening at Gothenburg film festival and a visit at Berlinale, and it’s really great to notice that many people have heard about the movie in many different ways. This means you guys did a great job spreading the word, thank you so much for that!

Next step is a film festival in Milano, Squardi Altrove, two weeks at a cinema in Ukraine starting tomorrow and after this at cinema in Nürnberg, Casablanca.

In March there will be a press screening and press conference in Kiev, and screenings in Sweden in Sunne and Södertälje. We’re also making planes for screenings in Finland and Hungary.

I’m on my way through a snowy but sunny Sweden from Stockholm to Gothenburg for the screening of Nasty Old People on Gothenburg film festival.

Even though we wasn´t nominated to the people´s prize of “guldbaggen” it was still kind of amazing to take part at guldbaggen two days ago. Now it´s two and a half year since I took the bank loan and started the shooting. Somehow it´s a long time ago, and at the same time so short!

When I evaluate this time, I’m damn sure it´s worth every second.

Now I’ll also take part in Nordic Film Lab at Gothenburg filmfestival and I’ll present myself and Nasty. And I have decided to focus on Creative Common, since I have realized not many in the film industry know about the CC-licens, and I truly belive this is the future, and something deeply important to us as creators.

So, I´ll get back to you about what happens, mean while, keep seeding and spread the word.

Meanwhile the work with the new script continues. I’ll go to London to take part in the second part of Sources 2, an international screenwriting workshop, and hopefully take the script on step forward. We’re hoping to start the shooting at spring 2011.

The casting to a short which will be shoot during this spring has also begun.

Today I got a nice report from Malky about what´s happening on the Russian trackers. There are three different torrents of the movie on torrents.ru, and it´s also seeded from http://kinozal.tv/details.php?id=434530, another popular Russian tracker.

In RUSSIA!!!

Today, and for five days, Nasty Old People will be on the front-page of the biggest Russian torrentsite torrents.ru! This happens thanks to Malky, and we´re all very grateful to him!

To all users on torrents.ru: Nasty Old People is a Swedish independent film that started with a bank loan of 10 000 Euro and had premiere with a Creative Common - license on The Pirate Bay.

Through The Pirate Bay the movie has spread to lots of countries and it has been downloaded over 40 000 times. Users on the site and other torrent-sites has translated the subtitles to 10 different languages and today the movie is downloaded by independent cinemas. Last week Nasty Old People was shown at cinemas in Lund, Gothenburgh and Stockholm, and in the spring it will be shown in Ukraina, Germany an Italy.

The movie has actually already been screend in Vladivostok!!

No one in the team got paid during the shooting and therefore we have a paypal account where you as a user can support us and help us pay the bank loan, but also support the team and the actors so that we hopefully can make new films in the future.Until today we have received 3 500 Euro.

Sustainable Culture?

On my way back to Malmö by train.

Nasty Old People have now visited Lund, Gothenburg and Stockholm! In Stockholm more than 150 persons saw the film in three days, and we received about 1500 SEK (150 Euro) in donations to the bank loan.

From what I heard it was crowded in Gothenburg the last day, even though there wasn´t so many visitors the first days. I guess it took some days for the word to spread!

Upcoming screenings:

Trelleborg, Plattformen 18th of Dec. 19.00 – FOR FREE!

And after that it´s Christmas, so the tour will continue in January 

Tomorrow I´ll take part in a seminar called K21 at Inkonst in Malmö. The seminar is about sustainable culture – local / global culture, What does culture has to do with sustainable development in an economical, social and ecological perspective. Those questions are really important to me, and of course The Pirate Bay and sharing files are really important questions in this context.

There will be politicians, designers, artists and a lot of other people at this seminar and I think it could be really interesting and create new meetings and cooperation’s. I´m very much looking forward to this.

Stockholm, this is awsome!

It was a great day in Stockholm yesterday. Karin Bertling, actress in Nasty Old People, made a wonderful performance and we were all very happy to see so many people there.

I think it’s amazing every time people go to the cinema to see a movie they´re encouraged to download, and this kind of “proofs” what we hoped for, that the internet and the cinema are complements, not competitors!

The crazy team from Malmö is coming to Stockholm :)

It´s just hours left to the live-premiere in Stockholm, Bio Rio, Hornstull. Four members of the crazy team are on their way from Malmö to Stockholm right now, and actress Karin Bertling who does “Elsie” in Nasty Old People - the mean one - is preparing for her live-show togehter with Eva Möller at the cinema tonight.

The screening was for free and Torben collected money to the bank loan afterwards. They recived 165 Danish kr, and thought it was to little, and added therefore the surplus from the bar and it ended up with 500 Danish kr! Copenhagen, tonight!

Tonight Nasty Old People will be shown at Filmstationen in Copenhagen, thanks to Torben Olander and Sebastian Chatham. You can´t enter The Pirate Bay in Denmark, and therefore this is an extra thrill! The screening is for free and the cinema will collect money to the bank loan.

Here in Stockholm we work with posters and the Internet to spread the information about Saturday, Bio Rio.

A screening for the press today!

I´m sitting on the train from Gothenburg to Stockholm and outside the window it´s still almost dark even though it´s 9 am. Its grey, rainy and cold. It´s always a special feeling to travel by train under those conditions.

It has been three intimate screenings of Nasty Old People at Hagabion in Gothenburg with really nice and fruitful discussions afterwards. Thanks to you who were there! It´s very special to see you face to face and to take part of your thoughts, experiences, and questions that was raised during the movie. It gives me new perspectives on the story, and I discover things I didn´t see before.

It also great for me to hear people saying that they can recognize themselves in the story, people who works or have been working in the home help service and knows what it´s about, that it can be really hard but also how much you get back. Or people whose mother and father is really old and has to depend on the home help service. Thank you for your thoughts and all great meetings!

Unfortunately I can´t be there for the last for screenings because I´m leaving for Stockholm. It will be a screening for the press later today, and I´d lie if I say I´m not at least a little bit nervous. So far the film has had an amazing life on the internet, and the movement – the guerilla movement as Gunnar Bergdahl says, - that’s active on the Internet, is a movement that wants something new to happen, who is happy when the old systems starts to move just a little bit, and who sees the Creative Common license as a movement for peace.

I want to be in those rooms, of course, but still I cannot help to hope for the old school media to see a value in the movie, and not least the way the movie and the distribution happened.

Today I have some wonderful news: One third of the bank loan is now covered!!! thanks to all you pirates! ;)

The tour has started, and in two days the first screenings will take place in Lund, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Hope to see some of you there!

I´ve been contacted about screenings in Trelleborg, Budapest, Nürnberg, Malmö, Ukraine and Italy. I´ll write more about it as soon as the dates are set.
I Also found out that the film will be shown at a common culture festival in Umeå, in the very north of Sweden- At this festival all the art is released under creative common.

I´d like to push a little extra for this, just because of the CC-licenses, I think it´s always amazing when festivals are organizing free culture, and I hope there will be lots of love in Umeå the 4th and 5th of December!

On the big screen

I got a phone call from someone who wondered if he had come to a home for oldies. Well. It was kind of funny even though I really hope he´s grandmother, father, whatever can take care of him/her self, if the son wants you to go to a home for Nasty Old People you probably need to look after yourself.

However, this was a joke, right?

Now the tour has started for real, and Lund is first out. Don´t forget to go and see the film the two following weeks if you live in Malmö/Lund, Gothenburg or Stockholm.

A new script!

I´m in the middle of a screenwriting workshop in Austria, Sources 2, with my new script, Granny´s dancing on the table, together with Helene Granqvist, the producer of this feature, and co-producer of Nasty Old People.

It’s very intense and I remember the days when we developed Nasty, the troubles we had, the questions, and the times we felt unsecure as you always do, trying to find your way for the characters. Should you listen to the feeling in your stomach, even though no one else can feel or understand what you mean? How much should you listen to what other people say? Do we feel unsecure because we go against the conventions and we actually should do that, or because there really is a problem with the character? Well hopefully we come out a little wiser than before, and with lots of questions to answer.

At the same time I´m so deeply happy that you guys out there still seed, and that you help us in such wonderful ways to both spread the word about Nasty Old People, and show the movie at different cinemas around the world. This means so much to us, and we’re happy for all your support, your comments and when you organize screenings of the film!

The heroes behind Nasty Old People

Today I´d like to write something about all the fantastic people who have worked with the shooting of Nasty Old People. First of all, no one got paid, and to make something like this come true it requires a very strong will, dedication and engagement from all those people.

It all started with a beer with Martin Lang, the cinematographer and Mattias Hildingh, the set designer, two dear friends of mine, who´s got their passion and heart into film. I told them about this crazy project, and was deeply thrilled when they wanted to join me. Martin has done shorts before, and this is his first feature. Mattias is a photographer too, and this is his first time as a set designer.

Through them I met Jon Persson, who had worked on some features before. Jon was supposed to be a runner, but very soon he came to be responsible for the light, and suddenly we used his apartment as one of the locations for the shooting, and Jon had to put his furniture’s up on his attic.

When you work on a low or no-budget film you don´t do just one thing. For instance, beside the set design Mattias also took sound, acted as a driver to pick up the actors and the team, he took care of the costume, and of course worked as a set dresser.

As I told you before Nasty Old People is shot during a period of nine month, it´s like a pregnancy, :), and during the last two months Martin and Jon worked at the shooting of another feature at the same time, to pay their rent. This means they worked non-stop for two months, without even one day off….

Johan Hedelius, the first camera assistant, owned a camera for renting, and I´ll always be truly grateful to him because he let us rent his camera for a very small price. And of course he lost some other customers during this period, so he didn´t just invested his time and his camera, he also lost other income.

Frida Nordström went to a film school during this period and started to work with us to get her work-experience. When this time had passed, Frida stayed with us until the end, even though she had to take her classes at the same time.

Sara Hildingh and Therese Ekstedt were responsible for the make-up and used their own equipment. This means they invested with a lot more than their time, because there was no money available to pay for the make-up.

There were lots of other persons involved in the project from time to time, among others Adam Sandell, who lent his own car to the project during the last two months and Lena Lodesjö, who made phone-calls at evenings after her day-job trying to find sponsors.

And of course I have to tell you about my dear friends and companions in life and filmmaking, Andrea Kåberg and Vanja Sandell Billström. It´s the three of us who runs Tangram Film, and I hope to make films and life together with them as long as I live.

I could go on and on and tell you about those people and the amazing job they have all done, but right now I´d just like to say: If you like the movie, please support us by donating, so those people can get something for their work. They all deserve it so very very much!

Screening in Vladivostok, Russia, TONIGHT

I just made a phone interview with the Finnish radio program “A-laget” at Radio X3M. They phoned me up about 8.30 Swedish time, and I hadn´t really spoken to anyone yet this morning, and the first words I say always use to sound a little bit strange… But, I think it went well though!

Just after this I got a phone call from a girl telling me she found out about Nasty Old People through her little brother. He and his girlfriend downloaded and watched the film, liked it a lot, and just had to watch something from Roy Andersson after this. So now they have downloaded all his films… Sorry Roy, but I think this is amazing. Not just to be compared with this fantastic director who I deeply admire, but also that Nasty Old People on the Pirate Bay can open people’s eyes to new kinds of movies!

I´m also deeply honored to tell you that Nasty Old People will be shown in Vladivostok, Russia, tonight! Alexey Koropsky has a cinema project called Kinosreda in Vladivostok, where he shows films not that well known. This is a big moment to all of us who worked with Nasty Old People, and I´m truly touched when I discover that Vladivostok is placed on the other side of the earth, in fact, almost as far away from Sweden as you can come!! This is magical, and spreads a new light over The Pirate Bay release.

This movie, done under those circumstances, and with the now existing film system, would never ever reach Vladivostok if it wasn´t for The Pirate Bay and the fact that so many people believe that sharing is caring. And this is just a film! If a film can create those meetings, between people across the earth, I´m convinced anything is possible! What will happen when those forces decide it´s time to create peace on earth? I´m touched.

Next script!!

A new week is here and it has been a fantastic weekend with lots of mail, response and downloads. Now we also, thanks to you have covered one fourth of the bank loan and that´s really, really amazing!

Now we´re also caught up by all the technical stuff, we´re making files in different formats for the cinemas, posters, tapes and so on. And in the middle of all this I´ll take part in a script-writing workshop in Austria, Sources 2, with my next full-length movie. It´s called Granny´s dancing on the table, and I´m thrilled to go into this process to see what happens.

It´s always amazingly expounding to read other scripts and take part in a group where you together walk into to each other unconscious dreams, hopes, needs and wants, to find out what stories are about to be revealed. Nasty Old People was developed on a similar course, with Kirsten Harder as script-consultant, and so many things happened with the script during this process.

So, I´m really excited!

On the first page again!!

I´m sitting on the train on my way back from Stockholm to Malmö. It has been three intense days, and some more are about to come; cause we´re now on the first page of THE PIRATE BAY again!! Thank you Pirate bay!! Yey!

This time we´re also seeding an iso-file with Nasty Old People in higher resolution! Download, share, seed, remix, and now also: organize bigger screenings! One request though from us to you: please send a comment or an email and tell us how many saw the film and please upload some photos from your screening on the fan page on face book.

As I told you before we´ll never know for sure how many people have downloaded Nasty Old People , but a quick look at all the torrent sites says about 30 000 times! We have also have received MORE than 20 000 SEK, (2000 EUR!) by now. This means we have covered more than 20 percent of the bank loan!! Thank you so much to all of you!

Me and Vanja from Tangram Film have had some great meetings in Stockholm, among others with Bio Rio, and now it´s decided that the film will be shown at Bio Rio in the beginning of December. Of course this is the time to see the film in HD!

I also met Unni Drougge, and Anna Troberg to get some support and advice. It was a great meeting and we talked a lot about what the future will bring! Unni Drougge released one of her books at The Pirate Bay earlier.

I´m happy that my wireless internet works on trains, because then this 6 hour train trip will go quick!!

Today I had a great meeting with Ellen at BioRio in Stockholm, and it´s now decided that Nasty Old People will be shown there for at least three days: 5-7 December. Before then it will be shown at Hagabion in Gothenburg at their program called window for independent filmmakers.

I want you all to know that I´m trying to find time to answer all your emails and comments, and even if you don´t get an answer right away, don´t give up, it will come, I promise!

Did I say that we now also have the subtitles in Finnish? I don´t know who made the translation though, so please write to me and let me know, so I can put your name up here!

It’s Wednesday, I’m in Stockholm, and about to meet a journalist from the Swedish film news – filmnyheterna - and I’m trying to gather my thoughts. People have asked me if I’m not afraid that we have offended “the system” by doing what we have done. Well, this makes me think of how we came up with the idea in the first place. The dream of a release on the internet has been around for a long time, but we didn’t have either the knowledge or the time to make it come true ourselves.

Some time ago we met Richard Topgaard and Erling Björgvinsson from Malmö University that research on developing new collaborative ways of producing social media by bringing together researchers, students, grassroots media producers, artists and IT companies. When we started to talk about new and interactive ways of distributing the movie we could easily see that sharing files on sites like The Pirate Bay is a fantastic interactive distribution that already works, but still no feature has been released this way.

Since then five students studying interaction design at the School of Arts and communication (K3), Malmö University have had the distribution of Nasty Old People as one of their projects, and now the film is seeded from Malmö University computers! The students are about to write a paper on the subject; I am curious about what they will write and I look forward to reading it!Today we have at least 20 000 downloads and 18 000 SEK, (1 800 EUR). Of course this is amazing in so many ways, but when I think about it, for me the greatest part of all this, is that for the whole thing to work out we have to help each other! Someone have to seed for someone else to be able to download, and I believe people want to take part, not just consume, and this is one step in that direction. So no, I’m not afraid to offend “the system”; rather I’m very happy that it actually does work!

Five days, 16.000 downloads and 15.000 SEK

Five days, 16 000 downloads and 15 000 SEK (1 500 EUR)! The downloading frequency is still strong, even though it´s a little less than when the movie was on the front-page of the Pirate Bay. I´d like to gather my thoughts about what has happened before we walk into the next phase.

When we decided to release Nasty Old People on The Pirate Bay, we had no idea how the reception would be. What we did know, is that this is a place with lots and lots of users, and many of them are interested in different kind of culture, like movies, music and books.

Just a few hours after the movie was released on the Pirate Bay we got over 500 downloads. Now, five days later we got over 16.000! The information about Nasty Old People spread thru social networks like facebook and twitter, and at different blogs around the world. And after three days 13.000 people from 113 countries have visited this blog.

Sharing files is obviously a great way to reach a big audience in very short time. Meanwhile we discovered lots of other values during the process. You guys contacted us and offered to help with subtitling, and now there are subtitles in French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian! You have also helped a lot by putting the film out on other sites and networks, and the same thing goes for those of you who have contacted us in order to organize live screenings all over the world.

We also keep getting amazing responses from many of you, which creates a direct link between you, the "audience," and us the "the creators". I´m not happy though to call you the audience, because you are definitely now a part of the process in many ways - by seeding, blogging, and so forth! I do really have the feeling that we are doing things together and I hope you also feel the same!

As you all know people are able to donate money to the film and so far we have received 15 000 SEK (1 500 EUR, 2 070 USD). This works just the way we imagined, some people give a lot, and others a little less, all depending on their own financially situation. Since I believe that culture- like stories, art and music - reflect and builds society, it´s really important to me that no one is excluded just because of how much money they have in the bank.

The film was released with a Creative Common-license, BY-NC-SA. This opens up possibilities and many of us are wondering what the remixes will look like! Last but not least, I believe there is an ecological dimension in this too. Since the distribution is all digital and we don´t need to print DVD´s, use plastic and transportation, it hopefully is better for the environment.

When I put all those values together- social, cultural, financial and environmental, I´m even more convinced then before that sharing is important for the future, and a necessary part of the steps we need to take for sustainable development to happen!

So! Keep seeding please and spread the word. This is not the end of it!

Nasty Old People on tour!

Now Nasty Old People has its own life on the internet, but the plans of going on a tour around the world is still as strong as before. We´re convinced there is a big value in the direct meeting between humans, even though Internet of course is a fantastic place for people to meet and interact! This is why I now would like to invite you all to write to us if you want us to come to your town and show Nasty Old People. It might be at a club, a theater, a cinema or at other places you suggest! Right now it´s too cold, (at least in Sweden), to show the film outdoors, it´s freezing here, brrr!! But as soon as it gets warmer we´ll show the film on facades!

At the live-screenings the audience will be able to donate an optional amount according to the same principles as on the web, and I hope the tour (travel expenses etc.) will finance itself this way! So far we have booked live-screenings in Lund, Gothenburg and Stockholm.

Little by little, Nasty Old People is more and more available to the world! People are being engaged in many ways: André Roegglenis is right now translating the subs into German, Martin Vives into Spanish and Anthony Nordström into Swedish for hearing impaired. Thank you a thousand times! We really love it when you guys take part in the process, in one way or another, and once again I´m convinced that the future is all about doing things together!

Very soon there will be some graphics showing what happens on the donation account, but till then I’ll keep you updated with numbers. Right now we have received almost 12 000 SEK (1 200 EUR)! This is truly amazing to me and to all of us who worked with Nasty Old People! And all of this in just three days!

I know some of you request higher resolution and there will soon be an ISO-file for DVD uploaded on the Pirate Bay. I also need you to keep in mind that we´re still just a few working with this for free, and because of that we don´t have the capability to do all we want in the speed we would like to. But hang in there, keep the world updated, and build the new future for film together with us!

I´m just so grateful to be a part of something like this, something new, and the fact that nothing would be possible without all of you who seed and spread the word. It really makes me humble. NASTY OLD PIRATE!

Nu händer det! Kl 19.00 idag, 10 Oktober ger sig some nasty old folks ut på pirathavet! Därför kommer jag från och med nu skriva på engelska!

IT ALL STARTED..
The story of this feature started in autumn 2007 when I asked a bank for a private loan of 10 000 Euro to start the shooting of Nasty Old People. I was basically afraid to lose motivation and creative energy if I should wait for film funds or some big producers to invest in it. So, instead, I asked my dear and crazy friends to join me in the project - without getting paid - and they said yes!

Two weeks before the first day of shooting the bank finally said yes! I was happy, but also terrified. What if it we wouldn’t make it? What if all those creative and engaged people worked for nothing? Anyway, we struggled together through hundreds of hours of non-paid work. Despite the lack of money and equipment we actually managed to finish the shooting of Nasty Old People in 32 days over a period of nine months. Between the periods of shooting we built the set design using old wallpapers, leftovers from carpenters and lots and lots of tape. Most of the scenes are shot in the homes of the film team and the actors; so for periods we stored our own furniture in attics. And also, of course, we had to take care of our ordinary day-jobs.

Anyway, when we had shot two-thirds of the feature I was tiered as hell and I couldn’t imagine how we would ever make it to the end. This was the time when I met Helene Granqvist, a producer at Good World in Malmö. Helene supported us throw the last days of shooting and went into the project as a co-producer for the post-production. She managed to find some funding to partly cover the expenses for editing, sound design, music and colour grading. The rest of the post-production is done by Good World for free. Today when we’re done and I look back I can see it’s a great thing we finished the shooting. But to me it’s even greater to experience this almost magical feeling you get when you struggle together with a common vision, without money being your first motivation, and do things you hardly imagine yourself being capable of doing.

Through this journey I learnt a lot about filmmaking, and storytelling, but I think most of all I learned how to jump into the unknown together with other people - without knowing the outcome - but still having trust in other people and in life. That life itself will carry on when you are too tired and don’t have the strength to continue on your own.

THE RELEASE
Now when it’s finished, we are happy to release Nasty Old People to the world wide audience on the net. We do this in a different way for the same reasons we once started the project in a different way. We don’t want to wait for someone else to accept the film. There is just too much love invested in the project. Putting it in a box to store is not an option. We wanted to tell a story and of course we want it to be shown everywhere. So, now it's out; free to leech and seed, copy, share and remix, and hopefully it will be around for a long time.

I don’t want to force people to pay for Nasty Old People, because I’m convinced that stories, art and music create and reflect the society we live in and being able to take part of that creativity should not be dependent on how much money you have in the bank.

Still, of course, I would be thrilled if the team and the actors behind Nasty Old People could get something for all their work, that the bank loan can be repaid and I hope that we can do lots of features together in the future; next time with a little more money. So if you like what you see and would like us to produce some more please support us by sending us some money.

THE TOUR
Even though Nasty Old People is released on the net it will still be shown in public places and perhaps in small theatres and at film festivals around Europe. The tour starts in Malmö, Sweden. Tonight, the 10th of October Nasty Old People is shown in Malmö at Kontrapunkt by Luffarbion, aka Vagabond Cinema, which basically is a cinema on wheels run by the film collective RåFILM. Kontrapunkt is a meeting place and workspace for creative people engaged in diverse cultural activities.

On its tour around the world Nasty Old People will be shown outdoors on facades, in clubs, cinemas and theatres. The admission will always be free according to the same principles as on the net. The audience gets the opportunity to donate an optional amount that goes to the loan, distribution, salary to the team, and financing our next feature.

Dubbel-premiär!

Det händer spännande saker nu, och vi är alla lite spända och nervösa. Samtidigt som inspelningsteamet just nu bygger och fixar och målar inför premiären på kontrapunkt på lördag så är allt äntligen i sista stund (nästan) klart för Nasty Old Peoples on-line premiär på The Pirate Bay, samtidigt som off-line premiären på kontrapunkt. (Jag fick reda på häromdagen att det heter så nuförtiden, inte IRL. J)

På lördag den 10 Oktober kommer Nasty Old People ligga på The Pirate Bays förstasida, med en Creative Common licens. Detta betyder att man har rätt att ladda ner, sprida, kopiera och remixa filmen så mycket man vill, så länge man anger vilka upphovsmännen är, inte använder den för kommersiellt bruk, och så länge andra får remixa remixarna.

Visst är det lite läskigt för oss alla att låta filmen ha premiär där eftersom vi inte riktigt vet vad som kommer hända, det är ju inte riktigt så man brukar göra. Filmer hamnar ju oftast på nätet sist, och då av ”misstag” dvs det är inte kreatörerna själva som lägger upp den där. Samtidigt är ju nätet den plats på jorden där man ser mest film! Efter att ha funderat ganska mycket fram och tillbaka bestämde vi oss för att försöka göra det där vi skulle vilja göra lite oftare: Lyssna på känslan i magen och göra det vi egentligen inte vågar.

Ang inträde och sånt tänker vi likadant med nät-premiären som med live-visningarna. Vi tar inget inträde utan man kommer istället kunna sponsra filmen med vad man vill och kan, eftersom folk har olika ekonomiska förutsättningar.

Detta betyder alltså att du som inte har möjlighet att komma på festen på kontrapunkt kan delta i alla fall! Samla dina vänner, ladda hem filmen och ha premiär hemma hos dig!

Nasty Old People är nu en färdig film, och det sätt som filmen har blivit till på är en berättelse i sig. Allt startade med ett banklån på 100 000 och några människor som jobbade ideellt. Filmen kommer ha premiär med Luffarbion på kontrapunkt, ett kulturhus där en mångfald av skapande och engagerade människor kan mötas. Kontrapunkt bygger på att vi skapar tillsammans, enligt samma princip som filmen ärgjord och vi vill därför bjuda in dig att delta i förberedelserna inför premiären.

Torsdag 8:e och fredag 9:e skapar vi tillsammans rummet där premiären äger rum. Vi kommer bygga en atmosfär som återspeglar rummet och till detta behövs tantsaker!Ta med en virkad duk, en bonad eller en pelargon och bygg en tantvärld med oss! Luffarbion är RåFILMs rullande biograf som visar film på husfasader och efter premiären kommer filmen ge sig iväg på turné i världen.

Nasty Old People

Igår hade min debutfilm ”Nasty Old People” förhandspremiär på Victoriateatern i Malmö!

Nu kommer filmen ge sig ut på turné i världen och den här bloggen är till för att du ska kunna följa med på resan. Men innan vi ger oss av vill jag berätta lite om hur resan har varit fram tills nu.

Jag heter Hanna Sköld och är en tredjedel av Tangram Film i Malmö. Dom andra två tredjedelarna heter Andrea Kåberg och Vanja Sandell Billström. Hösten 2007 tog jag ett banklån på 100 000 kr och satte igång inspelningen av filmen "Nasty Old People". Jag var nämligen rädd att förlora lust, motivation och kreativitet om jag skulle använda min tid och energi till att hitta producenter och finansiering istället för att berätta en historia. Dessutom tror jag det är viktigt att inte vänta på tillåtelse eller bekräftelse från någon annan innan man gör det man brinner för, för då finns det en risk att viktiga värden och kreativ energi går förlorad.

Eftersom en film kostar väldigt mycket mer än 100 000 kr, frågade jag mina vänner om de ville vara med och investera sina löner i filmen. De sa ja (!) och vi knåpade ihop ett inspelningsschema baserat på teamets ordinarie liv och arbeten. Det slutade med 32 inspelningsdagar som sträckte sig över nio månaders tid.

Två veckor innan första inspelningsdag sa banken ja, och vi sjösatte båten. Om man inte har så mycket pengar får man använda sig av andra saker istället: fantasi, nätter, mängder med dubbelhäftande tejp och väldigt många väldigt snälla människor.

Genom hela processen var jag många gånger livrädd att vi inte skulle lyckas ro filmen iland och att allt arbete så många människor investerat skulle vara förgäves, men lika ofta var jag förvånad och fascinerad över hur mycket som faktiskt är möjligt med bara envishet.

När vi tagit oss igenom två tredjedelar av inspelningen träffade jag Helene Granqvist på Good World. Hon gick in som producent i projektet precis i ett läge då jag själv var väldigt nära att inte orka vidare på egen hand. Detta är en av de saker som fascinerar mig; alla de gånger i livet man träffar precis rätt människa vid precis rätt tidpunkt, och det för en kort eller väldigt lång stund uppstår ett möte, och just själva mötet skapar precis det som båda två behöver.

Att filmen blev en färdig är jättestort för mig. Det är också väldigt stort att uppleva vad som kan hända när människor går tillsammans och arbetar mot en gemensam vision utan pengar som drivkraft. Där det handlar om något annat. Något som har att göra med behovet att uttrycka sig, om kreativitet och att vara en del av en gemensam vision. Under den här processen tycker jag mig ha kommit i närheten den magi som kan uppstå när man lyssnar på känslan i magen och gör det man egentligen inte vågar; Om man vågar hoppa så växer vingarna ut.

Vi har lärt oss mycket tillsammans. Om att göra film, om att ta vara på varandras förmågor och kreativa energi, om att berätta. Men mest av allt om att våga hoppa ut i det okända tillsammans med andra människor och i detta ha tillit, både till varandra, men också till att livet bär vid de tillfällen man själv tappar bort sig själv.

Turné!

Nasty Old People kommer till en gata nära dig…

Tangram Film och Good World kommer distribuera filmen i samarbete med RåFILM och luffarbion, med premiär den 10 oktober i Malmö och bioduken kommer vara en husfasad! Eftersom det är luffarbion så är det möjligt att det kan häda lite precis varsomhelst, så håll ögon och öron öppna. Mer information kommer snart…

Efter premiären kommer vi ge oss iväg på en turné med filmen, som kommer visas mot husfasader och på andra oväntade platser i större och mindre orter runt om i landet. Det är på den här sidan du kan följa vad som händer, vilka människor och reaktioner vi möter och när vi kommer till din stad... :)

Filmen kommer också visas på biografer, konstmuseum och klubbar, och i januari går den upp på Victoriateatern i Malmö.

Vi kommer inte sätta något fast biljettpris vid visningarna eftersom vi anser att alla ska ha möjlighet att se film oavsett ekonomiska tillgångar. Du betalar istället det du kan, vill, och tycker det är värt, och pengarna kommer gå till distributionen av filmen, banklånet, alla som har jobbat med filmen och så småningom nästa film!
